Post subject:  Backyard Rubbish Tip
There are plans for a land fill site in the backyard of York Western Austalia. The company proposing this site seem to think that it will have little affect on the environment, ground water, local farms, wild life and residents. I think the company is mainly concerned about profits rather than the affect on the local community. Has anyone got a view on this?

I just don't think it's a good idea and I also don't think it is good for York. I thought I would bring it to your attention because this is a serious issue to do with sustainability. People may not agree with me and if this thread is not appropriate in this forum I don't mind if it is taken down.

Any thoughts about this proposal or landfill in general?

Sorry for playing devils advocate.

No one ever wants a tip, but we disgusting filthy humans have to dump our crap somewhere. What makes york anymore special than anywhere else the tip will go?

I've been within 10km of a substantial tip in every location I've lived,....barely notice them.

As far as I am aware there are still a few years left in the metro landfill sites. Some are cutting over to partial recycling, the main problem at the moment is unsorted (ie your green bins). Last I heard was when the current landfill sites are nearly full they will become transfer stations with a large commercially run recycling plant handling the waste (in the outer metro). You can expect a substantial hike in the costs for doing this.

Edit: Just read the second article. They are talking about the Cardup landfill site which is a restricted site not sure but I don't think it is under the control of a Council. Certainly been a few problems with that one.

You can live in WA where we put all our recycling in a bin, only to find all the glass is smashed up and put in local land fill as it doesn't get recycled in WA and too expensive to transport to glass manufacturers in the east.

As far as I am aware WA has a glass recycling plant, probably Bunbury does not supply it.
If you wish to see bottles and cans recycled push for a container deposit scheme (mind you have some very tough corporate opposition) :)

As an interesting aside to this topic, Colmax (the glass recyclers) produce a few rather interesting products. One of which is the ability to produce non sharp glass from a few microns to 25mm depending on customer specs. With a sg of 2.5 its quite heavy but seems to be a possible alternate media.

I think you have a point to a certain extent DrLuke and I am just bringing this up for discussion.

Here are some thoughts though:

York is not an extremely urbanized area; it's a small rural town with farms and small hobby farms.

Why should a small quiet town become the dumping ground for the rubbish of a metropolis?

York is more earthquake prone than other areas in WA and this may result in damage that is irriversable if the land fill affects underground water and the surrounding environment.

It might also affect the image of York.

I think your second point is valid.

But for your first point you could equally say, "why should the city folk have to put up with your additional rubbish, they already have to put up with the rubbish of everyone else.

That's a good point DrLuke we could just keep throwing this back and forth.

I'm willing to bet that if the CEO of that company had a rural estate in York then York would not have been picked as a potential site for landfill.

I can easily counter again, but as you said, it's an infinite back and forth.

When it comes down to it, everyone uses them but no one wants them close to them. Whether you are the CEO in charge, or just....well....you, you will a lid it like he plague. Same with airports and freeways. I'm not saying I wouldn't do the same thing if it were marked for my backyard, just thought I'd point out the absurdity of the whole thing.
