Maybe they would stop if I turned the light of in their box , but thats providing heat .
I read somewhere that 24 hour light for the first 4 weeks makes them mature faster and start laying sooner

not sure about adult quail

That is what I understand also. Mature birds will also lay more with a 24 hour day but not sustained. I understand a 16 - 18 hr day works best for egg production. Turned mine loose in the dove cage. Brooder time is over for me, I did loose a couple of the smaller chicks but I think they were from smaller eggs and were behind the curve from jump. I'm just going to let nature determine the day length for now.

Boris....I can assure you that's true. I have a 60 Watt light bulb for heatsource for my hatchling to 4 - 6 week old ducks/chooks, if you got light/warmth 24/7 they just go on feeding and drinking - and they definitely grow faster and put on more weight

Cage modification soon to be underway! As soon as its dark baby quail just huddle in corner now. When in the bedroom brooder constant activity. I also purchased a few replacement pullets. I wonder if the light will help keep the nocternal preditors away? I also got more rat poison, and a few rat traps.

You'll find most of Gary D's info on quails on the old aquaponicshq forum site...

http://www.aquaponicshq.com/forums/foru ... y.php?f=36

The "microponics" blog is his new site to promote the "new" idea of microponics.. (his term)...

The forum mentioned above has been revamped to reflect Gary's ownership and interest in "integrated backyard food production"...

Been following your quail saga with interest BRB. :D

Some questions I have:

I read that during the height of the normal breeding season, Japanese quail males will crow throughout the night. Is it loud and bothersome? I see Boris wrote of them squawking all night at 2 weeks old. Is this different?

As this is listed under chicken coop does that mean you raise them the same as chickens in terms of housing?...... and feeding?

I have been offered Jumbo Rain Quail.... does it matter which quail?... or is the Japanese Quail the most prolific breeder?

Nice job you doing! :D Got me thinking I might get quail ahead of chickens. Is it possible to raise both chicken and quail together?... or you think there will be "hen-pecking" of smaller quail?

The Japanese Quail are far superior in many ways.
Similiar diet to chickens but higher protein .

So six weeks from hatching to laying? Is 6 weeks a good time to eat them?
