Sounds great Slane, but the commute would be killer.

We continue our quest for land. I find it frustrating at times, but we are close (we think) to being able to negotiate a deal. Keep fingers crossed.

Is there any land within the city limits that could be useful for your purposes, or are you most intent on land in rural?

C1,
We are actually looking at 4 parcels that are either in or right on the edge of town. Three of the 4 have enough room for gardens, greenhouse, and orchards. The 4th parcel will be a bit small, but we could still fit in some veggie gardens at least.

Please don't think me rude Janet and the rest, but your proposed project has more than just a few of the thoughts I was thinking about and got jumped for as being commercial, but there again, I'm and newbie ... right?

codi -- nothing to do with being a newbie.
I think it was the phrasiology of you comments.
I use to think I had unique ideas, though joining here a year ago has shown me I am no ideology orphan.

You will see how helpful everyone can be IF you spend enough time here researching the forum.

You have to understand that we are here because we are like minded to some degree.(atleast more closely aligned than those not here.

Are jp's thought not without foundation?

I can assure you codi, that the time spent here is only a part of the wealth of knowlege gained over years of discovering how WE can do it better, as a part of the humans social challenges that we will face over the coming decades, and beyond our children and theirs too.

But I ask you not believe me, see for yourself, try for yourself.

Instant ideas are not always long lasting ideas...we want good ideas and with a knowlege base as big as"our" forum is, we don't know it all!!
C1

In one of Janet's earlier posts she says,
**************************************************************
"We are folks who want to return to basic values of supporting our families, each other, and the land. Our homes will be smaller than average, and tightly clustered to promote interaction with each other. Also to reduce the total footprint on the land. We envision organic gardens, a greenhouse (with AP, of course), possibly some horses and chickens, generating some of our power, recycling...you name it, we're probably thinking about it. The clubhouse would have guest rooms, activity rooms, and a kitchen/dining area where we could prepare and eat meals as a community. The thought is to rotate cooking duties, and eat dinner together a couple times a week."
**************************************************************
I think from this we can see that JP and her group hope to use their knowledge more for the purpose of sustaining a way of life which to them is a common value rather than to change the world. For them it is more about taking the next offramp from the rat race and get back to what is important in life, relationships and values. Hers really isn't about a commercial system. My take is that this will not be everyone's job, they will have other jobs. This is just the world in which they will come home to roost at the end of the day. JP, I hope I am correct in my assumptions.

How do people work this "quote" thing? :(

I believe in your vision Janet and feel it will happen for you. You strike me as someone who is able to articulate her words beautifully and speak respectfully of and to others. You are halfway there when you know what you want and work toward it. Follow your dream and share it with others so they too can also watch your journey.

Thank you, all.

Codi, it is not really a commercial venture, but even if it were, I would still post it here and welcome all input of ideas. Your initial reception came about from your phrasing and shotgun approach, as C1 has pointed out. We really do like newbies--meeting one more person of potentially like mind is wonderful. Even though we are far away, we support each other and share ideas. Interestingly, DaveDonley on this forum showed me a link to an establishing ecovillage near him. When I saw that, I looked for and found Concord Village near me. It was an instant synergy of ideas and time and place and people. I wouldn't have found Concord Village without Aquaponics and Dave Donley. It wasn't what I thought I was looking for when I joined this forum, but has become a major focus in my life. Strange-wonderful connections are made through the relationships here.

DT, you are correct. We expect to have day jobs, although with smaller homes to pay for and neighbors to rely on, I expect the need for income to go down. I'm hoping that Vic and I could be a one-salary household with early retirement in the future. Faye, thank you.

All, Think very positive thoughts for us Wednesday. We have invited a developer to fly out from Chicago to see our candidate parcels of land, and to determine if we could work together on a project. They are green developers, although not specifically familiar with all of the social constructs that we want to encourage in the design and layout of the homes. They seem extremely eager to partner with us--they're flying out on their dime.

Now that's a business approach that I'd be prepared to back or partner....

Upfront decency, honesty.... a desire to do business fairly for mutual advantage....

Putting your money where your mouth is ... as the saying goes...

And if you don't know about something.... then you spend your own time, effort and money to find out.... before you make any promises, offers or requests.

Sure is different from the vampire approach of just latching on to someone else and sucking them dry in order to meet your own needs I reckon :D

Just an added thought that the later part of this forum has triggered in my mind... I got interested in aquaponics because us Americans spend 10-20% of our disposable income on our food. That seems low compared with almost 50-70% in other countries. Granted, I thought I was breaking new ground trying out different stuff, but Google brought me here, and I've learned and refined my ideas.

Kudo's to everyone!

Nuff said, the newbie is goin to bed!
