A couple bunny questions for those more experienced. We have had these 4 little bunnies since easter. I'm still not sure of the sex, at what point do I really need to be conserned about seperating any bucks? They are about 8 weeks old. They are growing well, but tend to be quite messy eaters. Is there a good feeder that will help stop the dropped food? And what to do with all the poop - comopost or straight to the garden?

Thanks
Mark

Based on recent experience between 12 to 16 weeks they become potent. I have never been hesitant putting the poop straight in the garden as it isn't very hot like horse or steer manure and will not burn the plants. As far as pathogens it is always prudent to compost it but I believe it to be far less risk than the horse, steer or poultry manure.

As far as the Feeders go I use a metal poultry feeder. They can barely get their noses along side and get the feed so don't spill much. But they can get in the top of it and have babies in there.

young does often ignoer the nest box and have the first litter or two on the wire cage floor. Perhaps they do not know what is happening. After that she usually learns to prepare the nest box and have her kits live. I have one doe, a Belgien giant, that has lost three sets of babbies. If she loses another one she gets culled. I have 13 young ready to harvest so will replace her if needed. A friend tells me that if you place a block of wood under the pelvis and press down gently a young male will plop out of the shith and sexing young rabbits is a cinch. I will check it out before harvesting this lot for the freezer.

Spirit, do us a solid and make a youtube video of it once you have it down pat, the description is a bit hard for me to picture.

Here's a good site with pictures for sexing bunnies. You should be able to sex them at 3 weeks, although that takes some practice. You just have to apply a little pressure to evert the genitals.

Nice link, but I wish the pictures were a little bigger and sharper. I cannot really see the difference on the young ones.

What you're looking for is the shape of the opening. It's pretty clear in the pictures if you are looking for it. Vaginas have a horizontal slit front to back. Penises have a hole at the end. As they get older, the shape becomes even more distinct. Try looking at your own bunnies and see if you see a difference.

I can see what you mean madrone, but would sure like better photos. Also you can hypnotist the bunny "if done properly"???? It fails to mention how to do it properly.

I'm also skeptical about the bunny hypnosis, but I don't remember having any problems getting my buns to submit to inspection. Try this video for a clearer example of how to sex a rabbit:

well the scratchiest of scratchy rabbits sat calmly whilst I had a look, so it's possible the hypnosis actually works.
Thanks for the link.

OK - just cleaned out the bunny cage (has a tray to collect poop) and there were quite a few worms in there. Little white worms, the best I could tell no more that 3/4 an inch. Do I need to treat the bunnies, and what do I treat them with if they are to be meat bunnies. Ir could they have not even come from the bunnies. They were not maggots - but some kind of worm.

Thanks
Mark
