Excellent post Simon - I didnt realize the mercury difference - always though that cfl's were evil (my whole house runs on cfl's) to dispose of environmentally wise.

J most ppl have mercury in their teeth, well those with amalgam fillings anyway!
But yes mercury is a nasty, nasty beast and destroys/contaminates soil and rivers.
...and developing brains. Don't break a cfl in your house be very careful handling them.

OT but i'm glad that the old school mercury thermostats have stopped being sold in victoria, not sure if its regulation, pressure or just suppy, but its near impossible to get hold of one other than old stock.

Good. i had massive attacks of the guilts when i brought them back to the workshop for "disposal"

I tried for years to find a decent CF,,,outputs where low,,light spectrum unsuitable for me,,,THEN wandering through Big W,,,a coiled, rather than straight tube variety,,,,WARM white colour output,.....,BINGO,these things are fantastic,,,18W and give out as good as a 75-100W incadescent.
Cheap also,,4-pack was $7.99.

I've given up on finding suitable CF for my down-lights,,,mooving to LED's for those.

Mercury is a nasty I'd rather not live around,,I wonder how many of the components of a CF are realistically recyclable,.....,CF recyclers?

Yep, I get that

The point I would try to make Chappo is that you've gone on an awful lot about using cheap power, but I would suggest that it is not cheap at all. Think of your kids future if nothing else.

I think of my children everyday,in fact, every minute of everyday.

anyone got a T5 to CF comparison in lumens?

mum just put a new 23W CF in one of her rooms and i'm sure it looks brighter than my 108W of T5 HO's on my marine aquarium! might just be my eyes though!

*sigh* I just can't take the danger of mercury (to myself) seriously. I played with the stuff a lot as a kid, running it around my hands, chasing it across the kitchen floor... (yes, I know, that explains a lot...)

Ccurrent danger to children is a different story...

I repeatedly played with it, probably in grades 3-6. (age 8-12 or somesuch).
Maybe I was originally a genius, and am now just smart. ;-)

I do realize it's very serious. It's just whenever I see mercury warnings, I think of all those beautiful little silver balls running around my hands.
