EB,
Yes, and LPG conversions for diesels are eligible for the Gov't rebates too!
In general, they do not inject the gas into the cylinder, but into the inlet manifold.
The conversion requires that diesel must still be injected, as there are no spark plugs, compression ignition of the diesel is used.
The conversions can be tailored for maximum economy, or maximum power. When tailored for max. economy, the LPG tank is smaller, as diesel is the main fuel used, but the gas is used to give better acceleration.

Steve,
Water injection in a diesel can be used to increase power output (especially when an alcohol / water blend is used). The water injection also assists in cleaning of the combustion chambers.
In turbocharged engines, the water (or water / alcohol) also cools the charge air and allows a greater amount of air (and hence O2) for the fuel to burn with, allowing greater fuel injection with lower EGTs.

I plan to build a distillation facility to produce my own 100 proof spirit for use as injection fluid (100proof is about 50:50 ethanol and water. There may need to be some sampling to verify the quality of the product, before use in my car.

Tony

EB,
We regularly add gasoline/petrol to our diesel in the winter in order to decrease gelling, dispel water and increase the flash point. The big problems you have with it are, 1) you can prematurely burn the tips off of your injectors, 2) you can cause burnt valves and 3) you can blow the head off of the engine. (I saw two guys do that one morning with a can of starting fluid! There is a reason why they tell you to spray it for only a few seconds, crank the engine and respray after a period of time that has allowed most of the previous treatment to dissipate.)

Tony,
Take a look at this site.

http://home.earthlink.net/~dlaw70/12stmng.htm

This fellow has information on stuff ranging from steam engines, to making distilliations, to body building, to the Bible. Lots of info, some of it I don't "buy", but it is available.

Moke,
Thanks for the link, I did look, but I know where I can get all of the info on the web, so I will not "buy it" either. There are forums like this one on almost every topic of interest to me (and obviously many others) which are a valuable resource to DIY enthusiasts.
