Our cauliflowers have been growing all winter, and this one was the largest we have grown to date.We have been eating single leaves for quite a while but thought we would treat ourselves to a cauliflower cheese supper tonight.
The head weighed over 4 1/2 lbs - so we will manage at least three meals out of the head. Most of the leaves had been eaten by various insects so the leaves and the stalk (which was massive) were given to the pigs to enjoy!

You can eat cauli ,broccli turnip and sweet potato leaves if you wish.I guess you could try any vegie leaves ,a little bit first to see what it is like .The New Zealanders eat thistle leaves and if they told you it was silver beet you might even believe them.

The leaves of cauliflower, broccolli etc. are full of nutrients and minerals and are said to be good for you.We were always taught ,as children that if you ate your greens you would grow up big and strong!!
Nowadays the scientists find that steaming the leaves in particular will help to prevent many diseases. 8)

Or the leaves of any members of the night shade family (like tomatoes, cucumbers and egg plant, potatoes and many others) because of alkaloids. Apparently heating only destroys some of the alkaloids. Something else I saw was
Quote:
The levels of nicotine in the leaves of nightshade plants are much higher than in nightshade fruits or tubers. 8-10 cigarettes, if eaten, would be enough to kill a person.
which came from this website http://www.trustedhands.com/id267.html

Another point to bear in mind is the capacity of brassicas to generate vast amounts of intestinal gas. That cauliflower should produce something measurable on the Richter scale.
