Ive seen peple directly plant greens such as, lettuce, collards, mustard, or turnip greens ( and others) in water, like the raft method. How is this done, and is it equally efficent ( as far as growth rate) as planting in substrate raised above the water line?

I've thought about moving my greens to the tank to make room for other plants that can not be planted there, but I am not sure how this would be done. i have the water circulating ,and an airator ( even tho some say those do not help). I thought about making growing slots in a sheet of styrofoam then placeing that in the water with the roots hanging down.

Hey guy :] Welcome to the forum.

Do a search on 'deep water culture' or DWC and you'll get a good number of results on what you're talking about, it is rather easy to do as I understand, though I haven't really tried myself other than a small float I experimented with in my fish tank. Have to make sure you filter the water before sending it in there or it will accumulate on the plant roots and strangle them.

If you want to save space look up vertical growing towers too, you can hang them right above your fish tank and they are great for small rooted plants like herbs and greens.
