Hello folk in fish land.... My boys 'trout rainbow' are doing well in this weather right now. After a rocky start and one jumping out about a week ago after a 'western style role chasing flys. ( My husband ate him he was plate size and fantastic..... the colour of the flesh.

Each day of our high temperatures I have placed a tray of Ice cubes night and morning in a 1000 ltr tank and this has kept the water at a reasonable coolness. Fish are still eating well and growing :D . Over summer I am going to place 1ltr containers in the freezer and put one night and morning in the tank.

Each side of the tank we have placed thick cardboard and that white stuff which I can not spell polly etc as a means of insulation this is working a treat. going to cover the top as evaperation is a problem right now. Our tanks are under cover of Person / gadren tickness shade cloth which is helping. Over winter we collected the water from the roof which I am using to top up the tank and this is cool as well.

Our veg are doing well some better than others the lettuce not very good. Tomatoes, silverbeet we could supply IGA, corn going strong and the beetroot. Garlic so so. Peas great the beand not so, Cucumbers we are goiing to have a bumper crop of the Apple type have not had these for years. Will start putting an other tank in Next year and more troutFrog Flat :bigsmurf: :bigsmurf:

yeah iv found having an insulated tank works very well!!!!

im kinda upset about losing my trout but i needed to get the silvers started.

Good work!!!!

(a little tip, try post in the correct Category some of our admins get a little grumpy about this :D )

You'll probably find that you water loss isn't from evaporation.... more likely transpiration through the plants... especially thirsty things like tomatoes.... :wink:

And you might find you need more than a 1ltr ice cube twice a day during summer... more like about 10ltr....

And you might find you're still fighting a losing battle.... lots of oxygenation/aeration is a must... and I mean... lots...

Last year i was putting in 4 bags of ice each lunchtime, to bring temps down 1 or 2 degrees.
the big pond i have is going well.. happy trout and silvers.

Be interesting to see how you go this year Steve. I know a guy last year who was putting in frozen buckets of water in his tank and not pumping to his growbeds on the hotter days. He got the fish thru to mid Feb but then that spell of 3 days in a row over 40C and mins around 30C proved too much for them even with the ice!!

My trout have been in for 18 months now . The first 12 months tho were without a growbed , just a commercially made bio filter .
Might be a different story this summer with a growbed operating , but so far so good .

Well what a day couldn't log on so couldn't put up pic's and now I have found out all the details how xxxx Joel :whistle: things are looking up just have to figure out the camera attached to the phone :upset:

How are people going with their trout in WA if there are any left??? Damn warm night last night..

At 8.00 this morning it was 34 degree (93F) out the back of my place, at 8.30 here at work in the shed it was 37C (98F).... Yuck........

hmmm...Not an admin, but sometimes I wake up grumpy....sometimes I just let her sleep.
