Post subject:  Carrots of the rainbow!

hey guys,

Just a question relating to carrots. i planted some heirloom seeds of various types and colours into my grow bed and have been amazed by how well they have gone. However, the white varieties have got green tinges at the top of the carrot (no not the leaves). Is there a similar rule for carrots as there are for green potatoes? I'm not sure its a problem as carrots usually poke their heads up out of the ground and are fine to eat but I thought I should check!

Cheers

I recall that a green tinge on the top of a carrot indicates the top was exposed directly to the sun, the carrot is still fine to eat, I'm not aware if the green bit is ok to eat, but I guess to be safe, just trim it off.

curiously do the carrots grow straight in AP or are they a bit knobbly with the rocks ?

Best to post only once, posting more of the exact same question isn't going to get you more answers. Other post already got answered so I won't answer this one here.

Fixed...

Carrots tend to grow fine in media, especially clay and other soft or light media, though even gravel has produced some nice carrots for us.

although mine were grown in dirt, all the white ones in the pack had green tops. I didn't die yet, so I assume its OK to eat. the red and orange ones get different colours where they are exposed to the sun too, and that hasn't killed me either

Hey guys,
Sorry for the double post, my computer froze up and so I had to refreash it and it must have actually gone through, so it was an accident.

Cheers for the replies. As for my carrots, they all grew fine. The white ones grew the longest and got to look a bit like a wild, curly 'goatee' at the end. But not bumpy at all, ther purple ones didn't get to the size the others did but the orange ones looked shorter but thicker at the top. i will post some pics.

The above pic shows my AP carrots on the left and a store bought carrot on the right. I would have left the purple ones in the ground but they got pushed out and the tops had died off so i pulled them out to give others more room.
