Looks fine to me too.

:?: Nurseries often use water saving crystalls in their mix, which swell to jelly-like blobs amongst the roots. Should these be removed before planting the plants into the AP system?

Yeah.... in general I just shake the majority of the potting mix off the roots.... some people actually rinse them as well... before transpalnting...

Those roots look nice and healthy.

Due to the quality of the photo, I can't tell if some of the blobs are gunk like fish poo or fish food or something but it all looks pretty good.

As to the washing of roots before planting. Depends on the system and the load on it. I've got plenty of filtration so early on, I simply shook most of the dirt off and then planted. Now days it will depend on the type of plant and where in the beds it is going, if in a likely wet spot, I'll wash the roots better usually by dipping in a bucket of AP water to wash away more of the potting mix.
