Thought I'd start this thread and see what people think. Seasol vs Buried Banana Peel for flower production. I have used both in the past in the dirt garden and I must say that the banana peel seems to bring on bigger flowers from my strawbs. Very non-scientific, but through observation, the flowers seem bigger and hence fruit have been bigger. Will go and get photo tonight and post. AP strawbs have a burried banana peel or three in the beds and after about 3-4 days they are gone. Strawbs flowering strong and fruiting well. Haven't seasoled for a good 3wks. Will see how things go with banana peels (the kids go crazy for bananas, wait until I introduce them to banana frittas, ice cream and butterscotch sauce!). Quachy |

What about comfrey leaves. If you use store bought banana's they are dunked in chemical. Home grown is okay. |

do comfrey leave do the same thing? I buy the red tip bananas so no sprays and artificial crap. http://www.eco-banana.com.au/ I have some comfrey that is going crazy at the moment, so if the leaves do the same thing then you beaut! |

I think most people actually bury the banana without the peal. Warning on comfrey, it is not only a good source of potassium but also very high in nitrogen and phosphorus so might not be the best for aquaponics fertilizer unless you make a spray for the leaves of the plants. |

I can't remember who It was but I think someone had fish deaths after putting banana peel instead of the fruit itself into their grow bed. There was no proof that the peel killed the fish but someone else suggested it could be pestacide on the peel! Not a problem if your using the red wax ones I guess. I read that site above on the ecoganic bananas, I can't believe that other growers inject insecticide into the banana bell!!!!!! I don't know what chemical they use but surely some must be retained in the fruit. I think I will switch to the red tipped ones. Always wondered why they sold the wax ones for a little more than the normal ones, thanks quachy Simo PS - if you eat enough bananas the potasium in your blood can reach a level that affects your hearts electrical conductivity possibly inducing a heart attack in those prone. Killer fruit |

wonder how many bananas you need to eat before you go all sparkly! yeah I don't touch the other bananas any more, particularly after I grew an extra appendage |

He had chest pains and you could see the change in his ECG. |

We tend to buy lots of bananas cheap as they are starting to go a bit over ripe and we dehydrate them or use them to make smoothies. I would not suggest buying full price perfect bananas to put in the grow beds but if you have some going all soft..... I think seasol or maxicrop are definitely easier for adding to the system but I know it is hard to get in some locations. |

Have buried a banana in my strawberry patch for 2 weeks and the strawberries have stopped shooting out flowers over the past 4 days. Runners have always appeared and I have always clipped them to help stimulate more flowers. Will bury another couple of peels tomorrow and see what happens in the next week. Quachy |
