Guys,
heard that you can use white oil in your AP system,
so I went out and purchased some and was about to try to KILL so BUG!
BUT i though since i really know not much about AP systems and what you can and can not add, I though
I'll ask some questions first,
My system is only in its early stages and has about 15 goldies in it but i still don't want to kill them.

Please let me know what your dealings with White oil.

regards,
Matt

Personally I would not do it. What are the bugs that you are trying to kill? There may be another way.
Dipel for caterpillars
Chili and garlic spray
Sticky traps for whitefly, aphids and thrips

Sorry its been a few weeks since i been able to reply to this post!
thank for the reply. I didn't end up adding the white oil all though a fairly well known vidoe production from queensland recommended it??
I'm not even quite sure what bugs are good or bad so i've taken a few photos of some bugs,
I also seem to have ants that have fallen in love with my strawberries. How do I get rid of them??
let me know your thoughts of what my bugs are and how to get rid of them.

Ants, Bug 1 and Bug 2 don't really seem to be doing any harm, but i'll rather know how to get rid of them if they end up spreading to my dig garden.

regards

matt

I think the ants are farming aphids on the strawberries and the other white bugs might be whiteflys or some sort of scale insects.

Ladybugs would be a good thing to fight those bugs if that is what they are.

I use carb soda and white oil for powdery mildew and haven't killed any fish with it yet.The same brew also kills aphids and white flies.

Hi Matt,
I use 1 teaspoon of carb soda in a small squirty bottle and about two teaspoons of white oil.It kills powdery milldew but you have to do it about once a week when the milldew is bad but I think you have to with all the nasty stuff as well.It kills white fly and aphids almost instantly.I also use carb soda to raise the ph but you don't need very much or it will send it to high. The white oil kills the bugs by blocking there pores up,and there nostills so they can't breath.

If you spray it on during the heat of the day you can scold some plants but if you do it in the morning or evening it is quite alright. So far I haven't done my fish any harm with it but I try not to get too much in the water.I rarely use anything else.

It is availeable here from most nurseries, it is also called pest oil, as far as I know it is the same thing. I have used both and the results have been the same.

You can make it yourself from vegetable oil and liquid washing detergent.... we add pulverised garlic and chilli, and sometimes a splash of seasol too.

Here is an online resource:

It's easy to make your own oil based spray at home and it's totally safe. All you need is a little vegetable oil and liquid soap. Oil based sprays are very useful in controlling a wide range of insect pests in the garden. Pests like scale, aphids, smooth skinned caterpillars, mites and even young grasshoppers suffocate when their bodies are covered with oil. You can even use oil sprays to deter the citrus leaf miner.
Here’s how it’s done:
1. In a blender, combine 2 cups of vegetable oil with ½ cup of dishwashing liquid. Blend it up until it’s well mixed. This is your concentrate and can be stored in a jar. Be sure to label it and include the dilution rate on the label.
2. To prepare the concentrate for use, dilute 1 tablespoon in a litre of water, mix it well and spray the pest as well as both sides of the foliage thoroughly.
3. Always follow this dilution rate, because you can burn the foliage if it’s too strong and there are a few other rules; don’t apply it in hot weather and avoid using it on plants with hairy foliage as well as ferns, palms and cycads as this can also cause leaf burn.
4. Regular applications of this easy to make oil based spray will help protect your plants from many common pests found in the garden. Why don’t you try it yourself?
