Post subject:  Mosquitos, how can you get rid of them?

Hi,

I have a bit of a mosquito problem inside my greenhouse around my grow beds. I'm not 100% certain that they are mosquitos though. They have light green bodies, but they don't "attack"/bite, even though there are hundreds. I also have never seen any larvae in the water. I read about using mosquito dunks, but they're ridiculously expensive here, so I'm keen on finding another approach. I've tried chilli spray and I've tried mint spray but they don't seem to be working. What next?

Thanks Rob

If they're mozzies, find where they're breeding an put a goldfish or two in there.
Get a photo or do your best to google something that looks similar.
Once identified action will be easier. They may be predators eating bugs that eat your plants. Good diagnosis us essential

If they're not biting you ... then I doubt they're mozzies...

I had mozzies that didn't bite me. Bit DW to the point of distraction. I must smell funny or something.
But I agree, if there are swarms and their an odd colour and not biting, probably not mozzies.

Either that or a kid lurking around who has either to much time on their hands or a cruel streak and plucked the wings off.

Garlic spray might be something to try but it can negatively affect beneficial bugs as well as the bad ones.

If most of them are NOT biteing you, then chances are that most of them are male - the male feeds off of plants, only the female feeds off of us bloodbags

Ok, Turns out the mosquito's where midges. I found hundreds of their little larvae (little red blood worms) in the beds. The midges were becoming a serious nuisance, especially at dusk, swarming everywhere inside the greenhouse. I bought a bug zapper yesterday. The thing was full within 2 hours. Emptied all the midges into the tank. I doubt this will remove all of them, but it should be a means of controlling the population.

Cheers
Rob
