I was wondering if I should try to germinate the seeds or just bury right below the water line in the beds, this is a start up system.I'll place the seeds at the same time as the fish.

Hi Brydon2

Generally don't have any problems getting seed to germinate by just chucking the see into the grow beds. Even small seeds like Boc Choy etc seem to germinate OK. I have found some of the larger seeds like been can rot if they sit in to much water.

Cheers

Boc choy!, my wife loves the stuff, she's from the Phillipinnes. I have to find the most effective way to germinate, I'll search it! Thanks :D

My wife is Chinese, she has introduced me to Bok Choy, Choy Sum, Wom Boc etc, so we grow lots of it. I have grown them all from seed directly in the growbed. Not sure what percentage germination I get but I think it is fairly high.

I've always bought seedlings, but it's an expensive way to go. Allowing my lettuce and celery to go to seed (by accident) has resulted in many lettuce and celery appearing in my GB self seeded. for this I am pleased ;-)

I would say direct sow.

+1 for the direct sowing Kuda.

I have had mixed results with seedlings and seed is definitely cheaper even if the germination rate is low.

my experience with sowing seed direct in beds was very succesful when the beds were first commisioned. However lately i have had poor results seeding directly. I suspect that the critters ie, ants ,slugs and a couple of unidentified free loaders are targeting the seeds or sprouts. Im going to go with raising in trays and transplanting.

good reason KP 8)...

make the seeds available and let nature do it's thing.

Check out a thread called 'Moonphases'
or check out viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1683&start=0
and viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4918&hilit=moon+phases&start=0

There may be a few things in it that you pickup on.
I tend to go along with the thought, the moon is a big influence so why not tap in.
Also a plug for the BYAP mag, it has a story on the moon phases 8) and possible benifits
of planting on a given date range, harvesting and other practical tasks, within lunar cycles.
I germinate almost all by direct seeding.
Save passionfruit grafts

Though I intend to create a nursery for propagation.
Since planting is sooo easy :flower: re planting seedlings can help keep up with demand.

Soz for the rant
