55gal of water will supply 2 x 1/2 barrel growbeds.
Theres still more room there

Hello all, I did a quick search but did not seem to find any definite answers of if anyone got avocados going in AP. Seeing as how I am in the Southwest of the USA I could sell my spare avocados easily so I wanted to see if anyone had grown any successfully. Also homemade guacamole is the best. Other things I am interested in growing are grapes. How many plants do you think would grow well in a decently stocked 55 gal or 208.197 Lfor you metric folks hehe? As I said in my intro I am thinking guppies, mollies or maybe some cichlids to start with. Guppies and mollies are very voracious breeders, darn hardy and eat a lot so I figure I cannot kill them too easily. I already have a 55 gal tank with all those fish in it but there are some very pretty crossbred guppies I wouldn't want to lose so this would be a new tank with feeder guppies., fancy guppies and mollies. I'd be a bit worried growing an Avocado in anything smaller than an IBC,,,blinken big trees,.....,tip-over very likely. |

After a dozen failed attemps we finally got the pit of an avacodo to sprout and send rootlets out. We used a fruit far with vitamin B in water to sprout. Once it was 2 inches high and had some leaves we moved it to the grow bed. It has been there for a month now. It is agout 6 inch high and has several leaves. It looks green and healthy. Once it gets about 18 inches high plan to movet to a dirt pot. It will have to stay in the green house as we are at 3500 feet and get down to 5 deg. F on occasion. |

spirit,,,be prepared for a long wait,,Avocado grown from seed often take more than 10 years to fruit,.....,. Also,,,did you grow 2?? One from type A and one from type B,.....,need thetwo types to get good flower fertilisation. |

Thanks for the answers, nice to know I can start avocados in AP anyway. We grew grapes at my parents house, they sort of sprouted up on their own and they were very tasty. The birds loved eating them as well. Glad to know an idea of how much the 55 gall could support. That's a lot of plants!!! This is going to be fun! Chaos

Avocado's are on my list as well... but I'm going to cheat and buy a fruting dwarf avocado tree. I'll let you know how well it works when I get to that stage, it's way down the list. And shortly there after will be a dwarf lime tree. Because you're absolutely right, 'Homemade guacamole is the best'! |

you can dwarf avocado's quite well in pots so AP shouldn't be any different. my only reservation about them would be the amount of water a large tree like that would suck in AP. |

i know it'll use the same amount - big fruit tree's use a suprising amount though so you won't be able to leave the system unattended for a week. i'm pretty sure it'd suck the system dry with a couple of mature avocado trees |

If you want to have a productive avocado tree buy a grafted one. I had several avocado trees (grown from seed) - - absolutely useless (exept for an ornament), that's also a horticulturalists opinion! |

sucking a system dry of water is very very subjective to system size timmy, a couple of barrel system yeah, jaymies 10,000 litre system no. I dont really think any AP system should be left alone for a week without at least being checked upon by someone. Someone might steal all your water, hey C1

Has anyone tried them from seed in an AP system. I know that passion fruit does not like producing the first year but in my Auto pots I got fruit the first year. And the buggers won't stop growing.
