I got some duckweed from garden shop and have put it in with Marron etc, will Duckweed over take my tank, will duckweed clog my filter, can I feed duckweed to my chooks, will duckweed aid in algae control, should I take it out? I read a thread by gary donaldson but everyone was just starting out with it and thread stopped 12 months ago, can someone post a pic of duck weed to see if I have right stuff

there are some pics of various water plants here http://backyardaquaponics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1276

my chooks pretty much ignore duckweed. it will take over the top of your tank. it goes through our little redclaw pump no problems and ends up on the gravel. there is still some algae on the sides of the ibc, but there is still light getting to the sides.

Nocky, have made two floating rafts for my FT from garden trays used to hold punets.

Used it to prevent the goldies eating all the duckweed overnight,
once found one splashing in it in about 1cm of water but she survived.

Now it's too could, the fish hardly touches it.
Should be a pick of one somewhere on my thread.

I do't have goldies SS I have Pygmy Perch that appear to eat mainly mozzies and larvae, just don't want to suffocate tank and clog intank filter

Nocky, are they tiny ovals or little triangles? Ovals is duckweed, triangles are Azolla. Both will be eaten by fish, both will love a fish tank.

i'm fairly sure ducks lurve it, hence the name ;)

it should only make it up your pump if the water return pushes it down the water column, for a fix to this, try to some how make a floating "ring" around the pump return, that way you get all the goodness of the splashing / jetting return with out the duck weed being in that area
