Personally going commando is my fav but in certain situations they have to be slung up

I have found that the vine is certainly strong enough to hold them. The down side was when I grew the rockmelons (canteloupe), the vine was certainly strong enough to hang on to them until they ripened and then they picked themselves. A couple landed in the growbeds which wasn't far, the other ones landed on the concrete slabs and were a little bruised and soft. My suggestion would be to sling it up when it is nearly ripe.

Ouch, dang, well I'm cramped for room, (bet, you guys heard that before lol) I better sling'm up there, if they start a self-harvest, they'll fall almost 10ft. /3m

So when I sling them in hammocks... how will I know when, they are ready/ripe? other than time that is... cuz the growth moves much faster in AP. It seems, in AP, everything appears to be bigger but may not be ripe.

So am I to conclude size is not necessarily a factor of anything?

Right now I have monster cucumbers that are not ripe and seem to be an unreal size, as compared to store bought cucumbers.

Thump the melon or squeez it.. should be able to tell

often a guessing game with melons, our cantaloupe (dirt garden) often go from not quite ripe to splitting open in a day or two with the heavy rains we sometimes get.

I'd say sling them up and climb up every so often to see if any come off the vine easy.

As to the cucumbers, I've always thought that you didn't need or or even really want them totally "ripe" as they get more bitter the more mature they are. As in, pick them before they start to change color. Then again, I like baby cucumbers and baby pickles.

I will go for the dangle [ tight jocks give me a headache]
