anyone tried them?, my grandmother gave me a few again, she always has a swag but I've never had any luck with them, too hot and dry maybe? noticed a couple have shot and was wondering how they might go in my growbeds. How long can I leave them before planting, one is over 30cm long already! thanks cod fish |

Apparently... How to grow a choko: Buy a choko shove it down the back of the vegie cupboard till it sprouts, then plant it in a sunny spot with the sprouting bit out of the soil. Make sure there is somewhere for the vine to climb - along a fence, up a tree or along the bushes. Pick the chokoes when they are tiny and before the tough seed inside has formed. |

Tried them, they love AP. I was having trouble keeping nitrate down so planted one, along with a pumpkin, thinking that they may help. Choko everywhere so remember you need a lot of growing space. |

Ingredients: 1.4kg Choko flesh, weighed after peeling, chopping into 1cm thick pieces. 1.8kg Sugar 25g fresh ginger root, grated rind and juice of 2 Lemons, thinly peeled rind and juice of 1 orange, thinly peeled Method 1. Place the choko pieces in a large bowl and sprinkle over about 450g of the sugar. Leave overnight. 2. Place the grated ginger, lemon and orange rind on a piece of muslin and tie up the muslin over the mixture. Place the muslin bag in a preserving pan with the courgettes, orange and lemon juices. 3. Simmer for 30 minutes, add the remaining sugar and boil gently until setting point is reached and the choko pieces look transparent. 4. Remove and discard the muslin bag. Pot the hot jam into clean, warm, sterilised jars, cover with waxed paper discs, set aside to cool and cover in the usual way. |

More info on choko's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chayote I think any food you can make with marrow or courgette ... you could do with swapping choko instead of marrow. |

thanks everyone, seems they are easy to grow for people with semi green thumbs. How long can I leave them sitting before planting them? don't want to be too early due to frosts but not too late so they can establish before summer hits SWMBO loves pickles so that will be where mine will go! I have heard a fast food giant sells Hot Choko Pies labelled as Hot Apple Pies! cheers cod fish |

AHHH Faak Maew,,,I don't think it's the same thing.I could be wrong but FAAK Maew is more of a melon rather than a choko,,,. I'll ask the mother-in-law in the morning. |
