Hello,

I have had my simple IBC system for a while. Vegies were growing relatively well. It has some capsicum plants, an egg plant & tomato plant. The tomato plant has gone berserk and is doing well. Yet about a week ago first the coriander, then capsicum and now the Basil is going backwards.

Anyone have a clue? Appreciate your help!

Here is some info about the system & photos:

- It has 7 big gold fish
- Few weeks ago I added some Ironchelate
-pH is around 6 (at least it is at the lowest of the chart, may be lower)
- Ammonia is high 4ppm. It has really been there for a while, not sure why it doesn't go down (I feed 2 spoons of fish food a day)
- Nitrite is 0
-Nitrate is 80ppm.
- Temperature here ranges from 13 to 29 during the night and day

What sort of fish food do you use Goldfish food has very little to offer your plants

Your PH could be much lower when the Ph starts to drop it can go down quickly

What Ph is your top up water (mine is around 7.5 Ph )so my system maintains a steady reading in the high 6 range

If your Ph is really low you may have Calcium issues

Common nutrient deficiency in new systems are Iron / Potassium / And Calcium / Magnesium these last two need to be in balance

Retest your Ammonia When MRS Terra does a Ammonia Test its way out (squeezes the bottle too hard) so these tests are really only a guide follow the directions EXACTLY

New systems need time to build a nutrient base so if we want to grow fruiting plants (tomatos ect) we will need to supplement some nutrients until the system has aged enough

Best guess is the Tomato has used up what trace elements you had

Ive never had any luck with capsicums in newer systems they are great indicator plants when you have your system sorted they go great

I would tip in 4 or 5 Cap fulls of Seasol and then 1 cap a week until you see improvement

I put a cap full a growbed in every other week if I remember (old system)

Put some more Iron in

A big handful of Dolomite (Limestone and Magnesium) to bring your Ph up to mid high 6 range there will be a time delay for this to take effect

There are other options to bring up ph keeping it nice and consistent is important

Deep flood your growbed to check for SLUGS (Extend your outlet to lift water level to almost overflow)they can do a lot of damage

I stick a fair bit of "Munash Rock Dust" in my systems

I had strawberries that looked terrible once and tried lots of things in the end i scratched rock dust in around them and washed it down into the root zone within a few days they had improved so im sold on it , long list of trace elements in it .

Keep at it you will develop a "Feel" for what your system needs as the seasons and plant type changes

13C is getting a bit cool for the Basil and most of the plants I see in your setup are warm season plants so that might be part of the issue... Basil usually starts to show the effects when the temperature gets below 60 for an extended period of time but it seems like time of year has some effect as well since it's pretty cool here in the summer. Temperature issues sometimes increase nutrient and disease problems as well because the plants aren't in their optimal growing conditions.

+1 scottiy. We are heading into autumn, the plants are warm lovers so worrying about dying at this point and leaving offspring in their wake. Seeds, fruit etc. Plus with the recent heavy rain, that could have been an advancing trigger.

I did add the capsicum and egg plant a bit late (in summer rather spring).

I will also get some Dolomite & Munash Rock Dust as I haven't added any Potassium / And Calcium / Magnesium so far.

Sorry forgot to add, chuck a bag of shell grit in for good measure to raise ph.
