Are praying Manti like ladybugs where you need to keep them in a given area for a couple of days to make them stick around? Or do they just follow the food source?

I always thought that ladybugs would follow the food source too. I know they say to release them (ladybugs that is) at dusk after watering to have a better chance of them sticking around. I suppose it would also be good to release them near plants infested with their favorite foods.

Mantids are carnivores with spiny front legs used to capture insects which they eat alive. Camoflaufed amongst flowers or leaves it waits for passing insects and then lunging forward to catch its prey.

I was wondering because I have found several eggcases that have not hatched and want them in the garden area.

Praying mantis will eat any bug (including lady bugs), not just the bad ones.

Yep they will also eat small lizards and hummingbirds if they get the chance. I need to find my copy of the Texas Parks and Wildlife that has the pics of a full grown Mantis munching on a hummingbird.

I guess I will place the egg cases in my rosemary bush and see what happens

Most hummers around my parts are about 1-1/2" - 3" long. (3.8 - 7.6 cm) By late summer many of the Praying Mantis' are push 5" (12.7 cm) length. :D
You should see the walking sticks

The pic links Janet posted give the general idea if I can find the Texas Parks and Wildlife Mag I have you can see gory details they were really good macro pics.
