Sounds like potassium deficiency

Purple is usually a symptom of Phosphorus deficiency and normally shows on the underside of leaves or in veins, but by the time the purpling shows up the older leaves will have looked unhappy for a while, ie: pale green or yellow.

Got any pics?

+1 on the additional information but I do think Mr Damage has it right, this sounds like a phosphorus deficiency.
