My pH is running at about 8.5 and, not surprisingly, my plants are showing an iron deficiency. I see that many of you supplement with seaweed extract and with chelated iron when this happens. I went on Amazon and found Maxicrop Liquid Seaweed with Iron. Would this be a good foliar application for my plants showing the deficiency, or should I use separate applications of the two?

The great thing about Maxcrop FE is it can go in the water as it is fine for fish. I have had great results rotating weekly doses of Hydroponic Organic Magnesium Sulfate Soluble Greenhouse Grade 2lbs

Awesome! My concern about just adding to the water, and the reason I am considering foliar application, is because of my pH sitting at about 8.5. I may very well (but probably not) have enough iron already in the system but the plants are having a hard time absorbing it due to the high pH.

As for the Magnesium Sulfate, I have seen posts about folks using certain types of nutrient compounds that also help buffer up their pH. Is this one of those? The last thing I want to do is INCREASE my pH!! LOL

indeed our pH from the water well is 7.5 until it sits in our aquarium, greenhouse AP and Koi pond, then jumps up to 8.5. My understanding is we need to break the mineral blocking uptake by giving the ions in the plants a place to go. My lack of understanding of chemistry I felt kept me from getting it, but with @Scotty435's help I am beginning to understand what's wrong and correct it. The high pH settles down on it's own after the AP runs for a few months or longer depending on a number of factors including ambient air and water temperatures and oxygen availability. I'm still uncertain which mineral unlocked the poor mineral uptake in our DWC so I started a journal a few months ago. I'll change a few things and see which one did it. Also I improved the functioning of my MBBR (moving bed biofilter) and DWC substantially by adding ten times the amount of air to both. The air I believe helps keep the roots clean in the DWC.

Atomic Papa, with the high pH of the system water you could use Maxicrop plus Iron as a foliar spray but it wouldn't do you any good directly in the system water because of nutrient lockout problems. EDDHA iron chelate would work for you in your system water at the pH it is now or it can be spray applied.

I'm not sure about the pH range for availability of ferrous iron gluconate in Seachem Flourish Fe but I'm certain it will work when spray applied.

IMHO, it's better to spray apply iron anyway since it's not a mobile element within plants.

Thank you!! That's what I thought about adding to the water and it's good to know that Maxicrop plus Iron will do the trick when spray applied. I'll check out the Seachem as well.

Any thoughts on the Magnesium Boss mentioned? Will that raise my pH even more?

First off I rarely add anything into the system unless I know it needs it.

I'm not familiar with the particular product Brian uses although Epsom salts are Magnesium Sulfate so I think it just comes down to

1. Which is cheaper.
2. Which is safer.

Epsom salts can be purchased at any pharmacy pretty darn cheap so I'd expect the Ag version to be even cheaper because it's the technical grade and doesn't have to meet the same testing criteria but the linked product isn't cheaper - To be fair though, with shipping I'm not surprised they have to charge more.

This article related to float tanks has a bit more about the two - http://www.floattanksolutions.com/getting-know-epsom-salt/

FYI - There are variations in how much water is in the magnesium sulfate molecule - these are referred to as hydrates. Epsom Salts is really magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (it has 7 water molecules attached)

If there isn't a deficiency then magnesium and sulfur won't help the plants.

You can spray apply the Epsom salts (1T dissolved in a gallon of water) if needed and you're adding so little anyway that it should have almost no effect on the pH (it's pretty neutral anyway). Either spray early or late in the day to reduce the chance of a chemical burn on the foliage.

@scotty435 I have some Maxicrop FE arriving tomorrow. Do I spray apply it at full strength or mix it down?

mix it, ratios will be on the bottle.
