Post subject:  Seed starting?

Hi all - I was wondering what everyone does for starting seeds? I've seen people sprinkle seeds right in the media beds but that seems risky to me? I've also seen people put a small amount of sand in a net cup in a media bed?

I've been starting them in dirt, in a standard seed starting tray. Once they get an inch or so tall I gently pull the dirt and plant, then I dip it in a pot of water and all the dirt washes off.

My method seems to work, but I was wondering what people have the most success with?

Thanks - Levi

ALWAYS BE SEEDING!

I use soil in an old 6 pack planter.

I use a popsicle stick to I'd the seeds. I water wait and watch.

When the sprout... I move them to the aquaponics after I separate and rinse soil from roots. I then place is peat moss pods. I usually put 3 to 4 seedlings per pod. I place seedlings in the nft and they grow.

I then transplant to grow bed or soil garden I have.

Always be seeding.

I suck as this. However I've realized that some seeds will start better with oasis cubes, others with a DIY mix of vermiculite & cocopeat. I just bought some promix, but I really don't like it as it dries up too fast. The DIY mix has worked better for me. If you speak Spanish, check out this video (This is part 1 of 2): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kcyBENURWU . He's got a bunch of pretty cool videos, and teaches an urban gardening class at the University of Puerto Rico, which my family and I are currently taking.

Here's another good one.

I am horrible with seeds. I took a class from Nan Sterman a few weeks ago and I had almost 100% germination. Plants are now ready for transplant.

By the way, my backyard AP system, along with a couple of others, will be on her TV show May 11th which is an episode about Aquaponics. Her episodes are also available online.
