Got sick of a few plants just not going anywhere so pulled them up. This brown goo ain't good is it?? Is this the dreaded root rot? These were in the original planting, from seedlings when O2 in tank was much less. Everything from seed seems to be going OK to this point. I can see a few nice clean white roots to the top of some.

looks like root rot to me. could be a sign that your flood cycle is too long and or your water level in the bed is too high. could also indicate there is too much organic matter in the water not breaking down properly. how long is the flood cycle and how high is the water level? |

The smell was slightly offensive not like the worm farm, so it is rotting. My flood cycle is 2 hours on 2 hours off. I do also have shallow beds of 150mm which I now wish I had not put in and will change in the future. However I think now that I have a continual airstone in the tank and a (half the capicity of my tank) proper flood and drain box things have improved. Everything that I have planted from seed is doing well. I think the root mass and lack of O2 when I first planted the seedlings stiffled their growth. SO I have chucked in a truck load of spinach seed where I took out the capsicum and lets see what happens. |
