Post subject:  Wasabi

I have read some older posts regarding Wasabi, and noted the preferred air temperatures. Is anyone in this forum succesfully groing Wasabi? Would you consider my climate in South Africa to be too hot for Wasabi? It can goe up to 35 deg in summer and is very humid and our lowest winter temperature where I live is about 5-6 deg . I am really keep to try it though.

I was like you. Knew temps were too high, but thought I'd give it a go anyway. Result has been a major waste of money (as wasabi plants are ver very very expensive to buy here) and dead plants.

I'd give it a miss.

I know there was someone growing it commercially in New Zealand using aquaponics, and they were looking for other growers, temperatures in most of Australia were to hot..

Problem with it apparently is it wont grow out over winter. So it has to survive your summer. It seems to be a mongrel plant. I'd love to grow it too.

I tried wasabi here, too. It did OK during winter, but spring did it in.

I have ornamental ginger doing fairly well although the leaf tips are brown. My culinary ginger has come up. I just planted a piece of ginger from the grocery and it has 2 leaves now.

You know, the wasabi that you eat with sushi and sashimi is actually a high percentage powdered horseradish with green dye. If you're just in this for your own culinary benefit, put a piece of horseradish in the system and see how it goes--I think it would do well. Check the ingredient list on commercial wasabi powder.

I believe that all sushi and sashimi comes from salt-water fish, though. Not freshwater.

Yep, I was actually just kidding. I read a recent story about the shortage of tuna in Japan for sushimi. Apparently they even use horse meat as a tuna substitute. At least the Tilapia is a FISH (albeit not marine)

Disgusting.

When I get my second groew bed running I'd love to get some fresh ginger going. I sick of the woddy crap from the supermarket. Do you do anything to get it started? How deep did you plant the root?
