| Post subject: | Recommended Plants for DWC |
I tried looking but came up empty. I know leafy veg do well in DWC (Lettuce, Kale, Chard ect.) but are there plants that do poorly in DWC? A friend recently got a DWC system and is experimenting with various plants. Tomatoes are doing ok. Basil is doing well Mint is doing well. Melon doing well (seedling) Peppers have ALL died in a matter of days. I'm wondering if Peppers dislike sitting in water, but would've thought that as they're family to Tomatoes, they would behave similarly. |

As long as the water column is well aerated, your only restricted by what you can suspend from above obviously because the raft won't always support larger plants. |

Charlie is right, but keep an eye on your mint. That stuff can get scary. |

Celery apparently looooves DWC, though you run into the problem Charlie mentioned that they get pretty heavy, plus they tend to flop outwards instead of standing up in a bunch unless you support them well. (They also develop massive root systems, so your DWC needs the emphasis on Deep!) |

Thanks guys. Yes the mint is growing very aggressively. They have some celery seedling going as well. The water trough is about 305mm deep. I presume they can wrap something around the celery stalks as they grow to keep them upright (blanching??) |

That sounds like a good depth! And yes, you'd get two birds with one stone that way. |

I found one of the posts showing that celery loves DWC: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=14225&start=210#p522026 |

Strawberries love it as long as the water is well aerated and clean (which is really essential for DWC anyway). A lot of plants do badly with 'wet feet' in dirt gardens because in that situation, with waterlogged dirt, the water isn't moving around and is very low in oxygen. Roots gotta breathe! |

Ok. Good to know. The rafts in this system are floating on the water, and airstones are running every 2meters in the 6meter troughs as well as two air stones in the Fishtank, and a the water enters the FT through a spraybar. Any idea what size Air pump would be good for a system this size? FT 75L 2 DWC troughs totalling 4500L of water. |

I'm not certain but I think around 100 Lpm maybe someone else can confirm this. |

That should read Any idea what size Air pump would be good for a system this size? FT 750L 2 DWC troughs totalling 4500L of water. |
