HI, I have an IBC shift pist system with 30 jade perch and for the 2nd time now I have tried to grow cellery. All my other plants seem to do quite well in the 3 GB's! The cellery flourishes but it is always hollow and spindly. What am I doing wrong?

I never seen this you must post some pictures. My guess would be heat. Did you ever try parsley ? |

Theres a few things that cause this. Usually hot weather as they like the cold but I doubt this is the issue this time of year. Sometimes old celery does this but once again not in your case and lastly too dry. Have a look at the height you flood your beds to, maybe you need to raise the water level or if your on flood and drain maybe speed up the cycle times. Basically because they are shallow rooted when small they need surface moisture. Having said that, you can still eat it. |

MMM as anyone who lives in Brisbane knows it definitely is not the heat this time of year. It only got warm yesterday and this celery has been growing for the last 3 months in the winter. There is plenty of water to the grow bed as it floods & drains every 20 mins. This happened to me last year too. Yes I can still eat it but I am a BIG juicer and well there is not much to juice if you get my drift.

OK I think I have the answer. I was talking to Gorden from Gunagulla Organic Garden who grows unbelievable celery and it seems that the particular GB that the celery grows in is in the shade too much. The fact that the celery is tall & spindly suggests that it is trying to get more sun. So I have transplanted some of the bunches but will try some NEW seedlings in another GB that has more sun. |
