Post subject:  How soon can seeds from a plant be replanted?
Searched around for a while now and can not find anything close to what I'm thinking.

When I'm looking at this I read about seed saving for next years growing season. I guess some seeds need a few months to mature before they can germinate?

I got a habanero pepper from someone at work and it brought this idea back to me.

Question:

How soon can seeds from a plant be replanted?

Example:

As like with seed saving from tomatoes, if I saved the seeds today can those seeds be planted like next week to start new plants?

You may already know this but when you harvest the seeds put them in a glass and fill with water, the good ones will sink and the bad ones will float.

Dry the seeds out on paper towel in the shade or a window sill, if they get too hot (in direct sunlight), they will become damaged. After they have dried you can plant them or store in a paper back in a cool dark cupboard for up to 2 years.

It might depend on the seed type, but I've had things like lettuce germinating a few days after coming off the seeding plant. Tomatoes too (once their gunk layer is taken off).

I think they'll react more to temperature/moisture.

yea depends on seed.

e.g. tomatoes you need to remove all the flesh and prefferably let dry, however citrus must be kept moist, they will die if they dry out.

Also, i imagine the float / sink thing depends on seed type too, i can assure you this technique will not work with coconuts.

Thank you guys.

I guess I will give it a try with removing seeds and letting them dry out a week or two then see if I can get them to germinate.

I have not done anything with that pepper yet and will save it for something special or may try to pickle some jalapenos with it.

I managed to germinate some pepper seeds right after scraping them out.

All the things people do to seeds are to help them store longer, but nature doesn't have that. Seeds get sown right away in nature.
