Post subject:  Tomato growth

Hello everybody,

I have developed the aquaponic system for 5 months and the system is running well so far. i have tapila fish and the fish is growing well no die it means that the NH3 level is at an acceptable limit.

My tomato is growing very fast with many flowers but it doesn't make any fruit at all eventhough i have tried to pollinate with hand.

Anyone please give me an advice what i have to do to get tomato fruit?

Thank you very much for your help

Please see attached picture about my tomato

Regards
Tinh

Welcome to the forum Tinh :)

What is the air temperature where you are?
Sometimes the temp or high nitrates can cause this.

The upper end of your daytime temps is close to (just barely below) where tomatoes have troubles with fruit set. If your nights are staying above 24 C then you'll also have troubles getting fruit set.

What do you have for your nitrate reading?

Also possibly prune the plants ie remove some of the leaves (the whole leaf with stalk) especially the lower leaves. :)

Edit
It slightly stresses the plant and allows for better air circulation.

Cookie would probably know this off the top of his head since he's growing lots of tomatoes, I think your nitrates are OK because he has run at those levels and had plenty of tomatoes. If you don't see any improvement with the temp falling or the pruning you might try adding some bone meal (just a little at the base of each plant) to the grow bed since it's high in phosphorous and spray on a bit of Seasol for the potassium. There are other ways to do this without additions but this is the simplest. There is a thread on mineralization but you might want to look at Cookies thread to see what he is doing with filtration and where he's at with growing tomatoes - http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20661

Hi Cookie :thumbright: . He's getting flowers but no tomatoes with fast plant growth and nitrates about 30. I noticed your nitrates are running about this and thought maybe you might have a suggestion or two on your thread that could help him. Right now I've suggested adding bone meal as a simple way to up the phosphorus (this should work if the pH is below 7 from what I've read), what do you think?

Cheers

umm I see flowers and all seems to be open.. it can just be a simple pollination problem. maybe just try to hand pollinate and see if it makes a problem... if it was a nutrients problem the flowers may fall off before it even opens up. other than that sunlight is a next major factor.. more sunlight better fruiting.

He gave the hand pollinating a try and didn't have any luck. Sounds like were on the right track though. Thanks Cookie :thumbright: .

Hand pollination of tomatoes is a bit tricky... to best simulate a bee I use an electric toothbrush and gently touch the stem of the flowers to cause it to vibrate.. try that
