non-AP question I have a large agave 1m diameter with a stem about 1m long. Will it survive if I simply cut the stem rather than dig the whole thing out to transplant? Its mixed with some fairly dense tree growth so digging it out will require major work. |

Do you have a photo? It should work, just let the cut stem dry off for a few days in the shade prior to replanting. Make sure its well drained so it doesn't rot. Your Perth sand should be good for that. |

The place I'm currently renting had a heap of these which had been just cut and thrown on the ground. Some had even begun to grow roots. As the front garden had nothing in it we just dug a few holes and planted them. They have easily doubled in size in 12 months with very little care. |
