Post subject:  Growing radishes in Aquaponics

I have been experimenting with growing radishes in aquaponics rafts. We love radishes, but don't like cleaning the mud off of them. I finally got them to grow in rafts. I placed a seed each in a one inch rockwool cube and placed the cubes into the raft. The radishes grew well and nice round radishes grew out of the top of each rockwool cube.

The problem is that they have no taste. They crunch like radishes, but taste like water. I guess they are missing something from the soil.

Does anybody know a trick to growing good tasting radishes in aquaponics?

Are you supplementing with any nutrients other then fish waste?

Ryan grows watermelon and says it is the best he has tasted. He may also do radishes, from memory. Go over to his thread and see if he has any tips(and his whole thread is a great read.)

Thanks,

The only other nutrient is some occasional iron and maxicrop.

I'll check out Ryan's thread.

My AP watermelon was half the size and 1/4 of the taste of the ones I grew in the ground. No doubt due to nutrient balance issues. Not had any issues with radish grown in AP media (hydroton) beds though.

Looks like they need a decent amount of calcium and potassium. What is your water source for your system percy9427?
