I have a friend with a small flood-drain kitchen system with a hydroton grow bed. Her uncle put some popcorn kernels in the bed so they could sprout, but after he did that all the plants developed a white chalky fungus-like substance and died. Now nothing she plants makes it. Any ideas what this could be? Is the best solution to peroxide the heck out of the grow bed tray and hydroton, rinse, and return to service? Or is that a fool's errand? Thanks! |

pictures would help diagnose the problem. Only thing I can think of is powdery mildew but I've never seen what you explained happen before. |

I'll see if I can get one from her. I know the fungus was on the roots. |

Don't some types of corn come with diseases, which is why the corn you buy for planting has the red stuff on it? |

I had something similar happen. I planted some black beans and they all molded and then all my plants got root rot. I got it cleared up now my new plants are fine. Lauren |
