Post subject:  Air layering advice anyone??

I will be trying air layering on a donor avocado tree tomorrow ( Sunday 31st August 2014 ) after seeing a couple of vids on youtube.

Anyone tried this on avo or other trees and what were the results?

Looks like a great way to get a 6 foot tree in 2 months. With fruit already growing..

Looks pretty straight forward on youtube but so does parkour.....

I've had better luck using aluminum foil then plastic. But either will work. I wouldn't try a 6' branch. Usually have better luck with pencil to finger sized branches. Woody ornamentals are harder then softer plants and succulents. Also, I've found that sphagnum moss works better then soil. Good luck! Do multiple air layers on multiple plants...they usually don't all produce the same results. Wait 6-8 weeks and you should be good.

Hi Chris and thanks for the reply and advice.

Great to hear from someone who has actually done this and had success.

When I saw the video, I was very surprised with the size of the branch he was propagating. But then I saw this video.

That thing must be at least 3 inches across. Have you used this method on anything that large? What is the longest or thickest you have had success with?

Still, for a first timer, I will take your advice and start small. So you just wrap the aluminium foil around the sphagnum moss and twist the ends in opposite directions like a rollie or joint.

As in this video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qa43Bn8L3hU

I will be trying this in a few hours and let you know how it goes.

yep..that will do it. I've tried on larger branches, and sometimes it works. But, much better luck with most harder woodies using smaller diameter branches.
