how does everyone go about seed starting? I am using expanded clay(hydroton) as a media. flood and drain.
I want to get some lettuce going and maybe some spinach in a cycled tank which will house my breeder colony. I have up til now just rinsed the soil off the roots and put them in there, im wondering if there is a better method

I just direct seed into the growbed. Works for most things. Should be fine for lettuce and spinach. Once they germinate just thin them out to allow room to grow

I hope so. I just threw in a bunch of seeds into 2 of my GB's, garlic chives, sweet basil, buttercrunch lettuce, red leaf lettuce, sage, thyme, malabar spinach, watercress, cilantro, just to name a few.

When you say, "thin them out," do you mean uproot the unwanted and dispose of them or do you relocate them and arrange the plants for adequate spacing?

Usually, when you thin, they don't survive to transplant. Women can have a decent success rate, but most guys will struggle trying to be careful enough to transplant. I usually just thin and throw away the weaker ones. Actually, nothing green gets thrown away..the worms get it.

awesome. I am excited to get some plants in here. My climate is less then ideal for gardening. bringing my garden indoors has been a work in progress, but this winter I strive to achieve my veggie load via indoor grow beds
