Tidied up a couple of GB's this morning part of the tidy up was picking a few beetroot. Also picked the first of our yellow beetroot, grown form seed.

The red ones are already preserved in jars but we have saved the yellow one to try by itself, hopefully they taste OK because I have a few coming on in the GB's.

Anyone eaten these before??

Yup, the yellow ones are nice, really sweet when fresh. They are complimented nicely with citrus in salads, orange etc.

yellow are related to sugarbeets? maybe why they are sweeter.

I don't like the yellow. I prefer the red.
I work on the theory now that most varieties are common in shops because they taste better!
Although the home grown varieties taste best obviously!

Sugar beets are in the same family as all beetroot varieties (Beta vulgaris), they are just higher in sugar than others.


Generally taste isn't the first priority (at least not nowadays). It's rate of growth, yield, and durability during transport that tend to be the main deciding factors as to what becomes popular commercially. You've only to look at the tomatoes available in stores. They are the most disgusting tasteless produce, hardly sold because they taste better (even when in season)!

Yep its all about the commercial reality.

I'm lucky that my partners small business is wholesaling Heirloom seed varieties and there's normally a wide range of seeds around here for me to try out,

Many of which I've never heard of so theres always a surprise when things start to grow.
