so we just fired our system up for spring and added new fish, its not cycled yet, what can i add in to jump start the system or give them some food til the fish start eating and pooping well?

i was thinking seaweed extract but not sure whats fish safe

I just started a new system myself, I added the fish, the plants, the air stones into the tank got everything running and then I added liquid worm castings, I added 1.5 litres to a 2,000 litre system. All levels were at a big fat zero before I added the liquid castings and over night I had 40 ppm of nitrate. 4 days later I have noticed a spike in growth. I bypassed all the ammonia and nitrite hassles and went directly into nitrate in 24 hours.

you didn't "bypass" the ammonia.. you will still get a spike if you haven't started the bacteria colony

I'm pretty sure that seaweed extract on its own doesn't have the ammonia you need.
