I planted some celery from seedlings (purchased from Bunnings). They really liked the AP and grew well till they were about 30cm tall. However they've stopped growing. The stems themselves are really thin and not what you'd expect in a salad.

Any ideas why they'd stop growing?

It's been the same size now for weeks and weeks. Still green an lush, just not getting any bigger :(

Could be some kind of deficiency - had the same thing happen last year - probably best to eat them now as I left mine last year and they got bitter and stringy.

it could just be the variety of celery seedlings you have. where I'm from we never get the big kinds..

I always found celery to have a slow start then develops better with age. Eventually becomes bitter but it's the back half of its life span that counts.... Much like myself ;)

We dont eat much of it but it does sort of stop and start for me too. I look at it for a month or more thinking its not doing much, and may pick a few small stalks, then before you know it its huge and bitter and stringy. Picking some of the stalks now might make the others grow quicker :dontknow:

Most probably of no use and no interests but Chinese Celery every time i have grown it its gone very well, to well in the tubes it blocked them solid with there roots,we cut and let grow again. The Thais use the leaves as garnish in there soup noodle broth and the young stems cut fine in it,you also find it in some stir fries and rice dishes.
The only problem i ever had was aphids.

pH was at 7 on Saturday.

Celery stalks are only a few mm wide at the moment. We picked one last night and ate it. Very strong flavour but still really tiny.

Our celery was also very slow to start. But is suddenly grew very tall, around 450mm. Seemed to stop. We are now eating it, it is tall and thin but very tasty. The next crop is the same, slow start and about to explode.

I wonder if supplying Celery with Rock phosphate would cause the stems to thicken up?

So it's about 3 months later and our celery is still the same size and same thickness (stalks are a few mm). Not sure what the deal is.

Definitely sounds like a deficiency of some sort, are the stems a nice dark green colour?

My celery is growing very well, and the temps here have no doubt been cooler than Adelaide (10C max yesterday, it might make 13C today), so temperature shouldn't be the issue.

Stems are a nice dark green colour though now the ants and aphids have joined the party. Hmmmm

Use some eco-oil on the aphids, which have a symbiotic relationship with the ants, so see if you can eliminate them as well.

What ppm are Nitrates running at?

What is eco-oil?
