Strawberries that wont flower and only want to send out runners to make more plants. Anyone know of a way to get them to flower? Trying heavy doses of potassium on the plants in the dirt but no joy yet |

Cut old leaves/runners down to about 6-7cm, leave some young new leaves... then wait...... I had the same problem and just tried it, worked well for me.. Salt level not to high is it? |

Just tried cutting them back and salt should be zero by now. Other plants in the system are fruiting well just a couple that have grown huge and never flowered. Got a few new plants from them and planted them in a dirt bed and they are doing the same as the mother plant |

Mine are fruiting but the fruit is all very small, what does that mean? |

I heard that the mother plant has the most and largest fruit and every runner/new plant they get smaller and less fruit as they multiply, something about using nutrients to multiply rather than fruit also. You may need some new plants. |

What is the source of the plants? How hold are they? What about last year production? Seed from a hybrid plant maybe? Adding a touch of Phosphorus too? What is the PH at present? |

High nitrogen levels will cause plants to eschew fruiting and focus on vegetative growth. |

High temperatures can prevent bud formation as well. Some plants won't initiate buds unless the temp is below a threshold. I don't know what your weather has been like? quote is from here - http://www.mastergardeners.org/picks/growingStrawberries.html Quote: Long days and warm temperatures favor the growth of leaves and runners, while short days and cool temperatures are necessary for flower formation in the short-day varieties. Strawberry size could also be due to lack of adequate pollination. There is a pic on this link that's a good example - http://our.windowfarms.org/2012/10/31/the-end-of-my-strawberries-at-2-5years/ What variety do you have Mantis? |

Must be the variety and I dont know what that is now. If the massive prune doesnt help I will just get rid of them |
