So I have the desire to grow some duckweed in preparation for my new fish...Question is...can I be successful in growing it during the winter? |

It gets too cold here in Oklahoma for the duckweed to survive in small containers outside, the only exception I have seen is the one small container I have that I placed a bag of miracle grow potting soil in. Some survive that but I do best with what I take indoors and place back outside in spring. I have yet to see how it will do in a greenhouse through winter. |

As long as the water it is growing in doesn't freeze you should be able to grow duckweed during your Winter. You get more light than we do in Oregon and duckweed is growing in my 625 gallon outdoor stock tank. My water temps been to 36 this year and it's definitely multiplied here since Fall... The lowest air temp this month was 0.5 F here in Eugene so I doubt it gets much colder there. The water circulates back into a greenhouse so the water temps stays higher because of this and the pump (which is always on). If the water freezes or then I think you're out of luck. Apparently there are different varieties adapted to different climates so look for something local to your area. |

So what I was thinking about was putting in an aquarium in my greenhouse to keep from wind and complete freezing temps...but would get pretty cold. I was looking at this as an addition to the fish diet. (we don't have fish yet...but until then I will feed chicken...) I appreciate your feedback. Gives me hope. |
