I'm in an odd position: I've been an avid gardener for many years (indoors and out for food a medicinals) but have never grown in anything but soil! Can anyone recommend a book or online reference specifically about plant management and varieties, even if it's intended for hydroponic cultivators?

For example: how does one know when to cull a plant and start with a new cutting? Is it different for herbs vs. fruits vs. greens?

Light intensity preferences? Photoperiod?

And guidelines on DWC: yield per square foot etc would be helpful.

Culling happens at different times depending on what you are growing. For example, determinate vs indeterminate tomatoes. Indeterminates will grow until they freeze. In greenhouses they use the same vine for around 2 years before they replace the plant. Determinates die after a set period of time regardless. Another example, peppers can live for years and years, eventually forming a sort of tree, and there is no reduction in quality and number of fruit.

Many times when herbs flower they replace them, but in general it is plant specific...

I tend to grow everything until it dies due to natural causes though... I'm still learning when to cull old plants and replace with fresh ones as well.
