Grows fine in growbeds. Plant as a block if possible to assist pollination.
I have gown it to assist in shading plants over summer.
may need staking as the hydroton does not give much support (in my experience)

Grows easily.

Some tips that works for me

- i stagger my corn by planting four seeds a week during summer.
- plant in a rock/heavy medium. They fall over in hydroton
- root growth is rampant - so beware as they can block syphons
- try to keep out of strong wind

+1 about the root growth.
I had corn in a dirt garden in some styro boxes. Had a few concerns that it would topple over but it stayed up in a storm.
Discovered the reason after harvest when I found the taproots had punched through the box deep into the soil. Struggled to uproot the box, pretty sure I had to empty it to get it up.
So, although I haven't experienced it, I thought I'd point out that they might penetrate the layers in a wicking bed or any grow bed using membranes.

I tried corn a couple of years ago but found it grows better in the garden so Ive never bothered again. I should give it another go.
