my cherry toms are splitting on the vine , some even before they are ripe. Google tells me it's because of too much water but what am I supposed to do in an AP system?

Usually caused by a combination of rain then heat... or even just a hot day sometimes Ive found.

I had issues with watermelons splitting open, and this summer I am going to plant them with a very low water level and try again. All you have to do is make your stand pipe lower. I did this with my peppers they where all dying since I have lowered my stand pipe they are doing great.

Id say you would be lowering the humidity on the surface of the media. The same effect can be accomplished by shading your GB's.

Soil grown tomatoes will normally split not so much from too much water overall, but a dry spell followed by too much water in one hit. This is why market gardeners will give them three small waterings a day rather than one large drink.

Seen it a thousand times with my tommies in the start of summer here in Kal when we have hot days and random storms and rain followed by more hot days. Split them right open

If the weather is warm and the fruit gets rainwater or sprinkler water on it, then the fruit will split.
Growing in an aquaponic system will not cause this problem.
Some people at this time of year will see their fruit start to burn in the sun and will then water with a sprinkler or garden hose in the hope of helping their plants and that is real bad news, because the burnt ones are still burnt and the others will split wholesale fashion.

The same effect can be accomplished by shading your GB's.

This year I didn't have the splitting problem.
Only ones with holes where the green shield bugs have been sucking

My fill and drain grow bed radishes split this year, they have shade....lots of it from all the beet leaves. Sigh. They tasted good but looked awful.

My tomatoes in F&D beds last year split- toms in constant beds were good. All toms in constant flow beds this year.
