Post subject:  ID for floating water plants

HI,

Just grabbed a small amount of this floating water plant from a local nursery. Also found a second type amongst it.

Azolla pinata

Duckweed (Lema sp?)

Wondering if anyone can ID it, or point me in the right direction for a web site that may aid in ID'ing water plants.

I'm thinking maybe Azolla pinata for the first and Duckweed (Lema sp?) for the second.

Thanks,
Aaron

Thanks mate. Would have gotten sharper pics, but could not find the tripod at short notice!

Now I guess I had better check their status in Vic, just in case!

Oh... I know Duckeed is a good food source for some fish. How about the Azolla? Worth cultivating?

Thats a mighty fine no tripod shot!!!
definately more than 5 meg...
If they can be ID'd and saved ' in what plant is that ' file
it could be helpful.

Keep a pond of these plants separate from your fish or you might have to buy some more...

Aaron, can I add those pix to the FAQ?

Jamie, go for it.

njh, Bought a couple of 60L storage containers from B ($12 each) just to get my AP project started. Most likely throw a few feeder in fish (have asked a Q in the fish forum) and play with that until I have all the gear ready for the big system.

Azolla is a high protein (about 27% dry basis), aquatic, nitogen fixing fern. It is an excellent food source. It is even used as a supplement in pig diets!

My Goldies love it as do my tilapia!

We have a very good link to info about it around here somewhere ...

Oh yep .. found it ...

I grow both this and duckweed. If I had a large scale operation, I certainly would grow as much as possible and use it to supplement the fish food bill.

Vist garden centres that have ponds and water features .. have a look in many of their ponds ...

I bet that ya will find duckweed and azolla by the million!

Take a plastic bag and give them a dollar for a bag full!

Failing that ... go to the local zoo / wildlife sanctuary and ask a keeper to grab some of the green stuff that floats on top of their ponds for ya.

I bet that they would be only too hapy to oblige!

I got mine from a guy that has a koi farm / shop.

Many of his water plant ponds were over run with both Azolla and duckweed.

He was very happy for me to clean the suface of a few ponds for him.
