Over winter when nothing much grows will your grow beds with no or few plants and worms act as a bio filter

Steve grew winter crops quite successfully (from memory) brocoli, cabbages and other brassicas should do well

Yes thanks jaymie its we dont like that kind of winter vegies [cabbages make you f--t] and home made beer does that enough with out help just wondering will it all keep running with out plants

Well if you don't like winter vegies, why not plant some flowers? surely there are some that will go ok over winter? Or grow some cabbages just for the fish?

Or perhaps something that will survive ie grow but not necessarly produce, I had peas grow thru the winter without poding. Lettuce and spinach grew well through my winter season even with several freeezes. I emagine your winters are not as cold?
With no plants growing at all the nitrates would just get higher so water changes would need to be done based on the fishes requirements, but the bio filter should keep chugging along.

Isn't that the same thing?

Nothing different in many systems. Grow beds are biofilters, Not all biofilters are growbeds.

maybe raspberries or other cold climate fruits? Don't know how quickly they grow though.

Yeah, there are plenty of things that will grow over winter, cabbage, brocolli, peas, silverbeet, mizuna, parsley, cellery, hheeeaaapppss....
