I've been trying to grow purple carrots for a while, here is my latest attempt.

The problem is that the middle of the carrot is orange, not purple! Is this just because it's small?

Yeah, different carrot variety.. There are the ones that are purple all the way through, then also ones with purple skin and orange middle. I think the one you have is often sold as Purple Dragon Carrot.

I bought a real purple carrot (all the way through) from the greengrocer with it's top still on it, then planted it in the ground.. It flowered and produced seed, but first lot we tried to germinate didn't work, should try some more....

Haha to me they taste exactly the same as orange carrots. I read somewhere that orange carrots have been bred that way as that is what is popular or seen as 'normal'. In actual fact wild carrots come in a number of different colours.

I expect that many of the carrots for sale are hybrids and I've never actually found a purple heirloom carrot. Most of the Heirloom carrot seeds I've found are orange, redorange, or yellow.

This might explain the seeds from the purple top you planted not germinating well.

Ive eaten purple carrots. May of been their age or way they were kept but i found them a bit dry. We had multiple batches from the shop and all the same.

Ive planted some heirlooms in the garden so we will see how they go
