Hey Joel, RE:the pumpkin from pic, You're not growing the pumpkin in the aqaponics system are you? Hope its a yes, as i'll be in that 
Weird subject, i know, but might be cool if people post the more "unconventional" things they are growing in their system (AKA aquaponically) Aquaponically? is that even a word

Sorry Steve, the pumpkin was grown in the ground...... I thought garlic was a bit of a wierd one to grow in an aquaponic system, and it grew fairly well, as good as the ones I had growing in soil.. I did try and plant a pumpkin once in the grow bed but it died...  Don't know if that was a sign that it wasn't suitable, or whether it was just drowned out by other plants, it was on the south side of the bed and didn't get much sun...
Might try carrots within the next month or two.....

has anyone ever had any luck growing strawberries aquaponically (LOVE THAT WORD)? They're $8 a punnet here at the moment.....and taste like nothing... |

Yep... theres a commercial aquaponic venture in the US growing strawberries... Though it's something I haven't given a try yet, I should add it to the list. |

anybody grown beans or beats??? I like beans and there are so many kinds too (in fact I make a soup which consists of 4 different beans, garlic and bacon... yummo, but bad on the nose the next day:fart: |

Then again just about anything goes with butter and garlic... I think my students suffer enough with the amount of garlic I eat now, poor buggers will truely suffer onve I have a full sized system going! |

Strawberries - part of my plan I love them. Hyphenated tomato growers (lol) have a thing that's fairly new called a cage. What interests me about the cage is one particular part. A vertical pipe with netpot holders coming out of one side at 70ish degree angles. = Vertical Hydro! System problems include less growth on lower plants - nutrients fed into the top and trickle through. My answer to this is to put strawberries on top (when system is established) and lettuce underneath. We'll see this happening, time is the factor.... |
