I was wondering if anyone could tell me if rhubarb can be grown from seed?
Mine has been flowering and I've never seen rhubarb go to seed

A quick google search suggests it is possible.

I don't remember ever seeing Rhubarb going to seed before..

I just figured it was one of those plants that is easier to propagate through dividing.

Isn't it funny when someone leaves a note on your desks and asks you to order rhubarb seeds for a customer. You then think to yourself, "Is someone messing with my mind"??? As I have never seen rhubarb seeds or a plant even flower. As far as I knew, you always started rhubarb from a crown, though you can buy seedlings from B that have been grown by the specialists. Then in the same week someone posts a rhubarb going to seed. Thanks for that Desertrat. You learn something new everyday :thumbleft:

I'm sure this particular plant was from Diggers seeds so it should be an open pollinated variety. I'll try planting the seeds and keep you posted with the results.

Crazy plant wont stop going to seed.
Anyone have any clues how to stop it doing this or do they stop on their own accord

Never even heard of rhubarb going to seed until a couple of months ago, now it is happening everywhere :dontknow: I would cut the centre out and just try to stop the flowers developing, I am doing the same with the parsley at the shop at the moment.

Rhubarb can be grown from seed, there are even a couple of seed catalogs that sell rhubarb seeds. But, it takes long enough to grow that it's usually easier to divide the roots.

That said, it can be a fun experiment, since the seeds are often different from the parent.

The plant does it of its own accord. Pull it out as it takes all the nutrients from the stalks/doesn't try to make a new crown.
You can grow rhubarb from seed. Once you divide it the divided crown of the new plant is best.
