I was advised that the root mass becomes so great on these long term tomatoe plants that the center core of the root ball dies and Pythium root desease may start and spread to other plants. The suggestion was to remove plants over 6 months old and replace. This from a plant desease expert in the Canadian government.

4.35 kg so far plus another 2.2kg today

6.55kg total.

Interesting DB, I guess it makes sense.. I'll be removing this tomato plant after it's finished fruiting over summer, it was pretty much just chance that it was left over winter

Strike some cuttings or just bend down a stem and put into gravel to form a new root mass, removing the old one when fruiting finishes.
