TAKE IT OUT OF THE WATER!!!!!!!! :!:
I've got 2 sitting in water. I did the trick of removing a few layers of the small leaves from the bottom moving up and exposed a heap of new brownish coloured roots. In just under a week in the water they are turning white and growing. I'm going to wait untill most of them are white and growing (but are not too long) and plant it in a bucket of soil. If I remember I'll get a pic tonight and post it.

I guess changing the water daily has saved you.
It is really interesting to see that they can be rooted in water, I've heard of many people putting them in water and they just rot, those people probably didn't change the water out regularly.

Generally so long as the top still has some green leaves, it will still likely grow. You can remove some of the dead leaves around the bottom, that is often recommended.

I was always told to let them dry out for several weeks before planting them. Apparently they appreciate sometimes being watered into the cup in the center of the leaves but I've had some tops rot in the ground where the dirt stayed too wet.

On this forum D-Decker... asking someone where you should put your pineapple tops...

Is likely to get a very predictable answer...

Most of the time pineapple tops don't want to grow directly in water all the time, they are not a water plant. It would be better to set up a gravel filter for the pineapple tops.

Now if you want to grow some edible water plants...
Here are some suggestions
Water chestnuts
Lotus
Pickrell weed
Cattails

Yep, I can't remember the last time I saw one in a supermarket here with the top still on. The couple of tops that I've used came from our local fruit and veg store.

Got a pineapple top to start rooting. The white tubes are maybe 3/4" long and it is still in the glass of water. Now what? I guess it is time to put it in soil and a pot as my IBC system is not yet ready for plants. Any tips for planting?

Thanks
Mark

Well draining potting media. They like occasional drinks of water in the cups of the leaves and can be fed dilute fertilizer that way too.

They are generally very easy plants that can grow in shade or sun though in sun they will definitely need more water. The more special treatment they get the faster they are likely to produce but they generally take at least a couple years to produce from a rooted top and they don't like to freeze. Most of mine that were planted around are looking kinda dead after all the cold weather we had this year.

Tell me about it...we had another hard freeze last night. I guess I'll just pot this one so it can be brought inside, perhaps migrate it to the greenhouse when that is ready.

Thanks
